Quantum dots help fight cancer

Quantum dots help fight cancer Quantum dot nanocrystals (Qdots) are becoming a robust tool in intercellular imaging and nanomedicine. Major advantages of using Qdots are their narrow emission spectrum, brightness and stability. Professor Santra from UCF and his collaborators have taken the use of Qdots a step forward. They have created a semiconductor Qdots, which are loaded with a drug and upon delivery to the site and attachment to the target cell turn on an optical signal. This approach has an immediate application for cancer nnanomedicine. Because of the incorporated optical and electronic properties, the created Qdots can be used for estimating the tumor volume under a microscope or monitoring the changes in tumor volume by MRI.

The short rod-like and spherical assemblies are made of gold nanoparticles with the same V-shaped amphiphilic arms. The self-assembly occurs upon slow addition of water to solution of nanoparticles in organic solvent called tetrahydrofuran. The resulting mixture is then dialyzed against pure water in order to remove organic solvent and obtain a pure aqueous solution of the superstructures (they remain in water without any precipitation, just like micelles).
